More than one year has passed since the European Union and Turkey have struck their inhumane and deplorable deal.
One year – and for the refugees a lot has changed to the worse. The hope for peace and freedom is shrinking, the frustration is growing, fear and desperation are taking over.
In the last weeks our students have had to endure, experience and suffer a lot – demoralized by the commencing deportations of Syrian and Afghan nationals und repeated negative asylum notifications, a young man in VIAL camp decided to set himself on fire in an act of protest and subsequently succumbed to his wounds. The long time, the daily humiliation and the hopelessness drive the people mad and bring their will to live to the brink.
Teenagers are being arrested by the police on the way to the Youth Centre and are being held for several hours or even days without further justification. The familiar way through the city, from the camp to Youth Centre, has become an unsafe enterprise, which even prevents some teenagers from leaving their tent or container.
But life there is also unbearable and dangerous for everybody: on Thursday, the right-wing radical party Golden Dawn attacked the refugees in Souda camp again. Fortunately, according to our sources, nobody has been severely hurt. Some families fled the camp with their children and spent the night in the park, at the port hiding under trucks or elsewhere.
The children are scared, the adults are helpless, frustrated and also frightened, far away from a safe and peaceful Europe, in which fellow citizens would settle down and start the peaceful future that we all wish for ourselves.
Our volunteers try daily to compensate the tension, the fears and frustration of the children with a lot of dedication and love, just to give them a piece of normality and peace in any way and create a small oasis of happiness together.
